Emerging Learning Technologies for Instructional Delivery
Two areas that I would like to explore in terms of emerging learning technologies for instructional delivery are virtual reality and gamification. Virtual reality is a modern immersive tool that can be used to fully engage learners and transform learning experiences. Virtual reality is a “sophisticated technology that uses realistic images, audios, and other senses to simulate a real environment, is an elite technology which has contributed towards a vast change in the learning system. The environment experienced when using virtual reality is simulated, but the learning impact is real” (Goel, 2017). When used for instructional design purpose for employee onboarding, job simulation, or specific training, virtual reality can be a way for employees to be more engaged since they are immersed in a three-dimensional world versus the typical setting of a two-dimensional world. Upon reviewing several sources, one blogger wrote that an idea for utilizing virtual reality would best be served under a new company or organization-wide learning objective versus replacing already made learning content. Another area of learning technology to consider while building learning content is gamification. Gamification is a way to use technology and artificial intelligence to "further engage students in education through a game in which a scoreboard, leaderboard, and change feedback create a gamified atmosphere in a non-gaming context" (Ghai & Tandon, 2022). Similar to virtual reality, gamification is a mode of learning that can be used to increase learner engagement and retention of knowledge. References:
